Culte du Cuir's best-seller, this designer inspired corset belt has nothing but glowing 5-star reviews!
 
Inspired by the 'undone corset belt' by Dehanche. For those who don't want to wear real hide, but ALSO want to reduce their use of plastics, this version is made using Desserto® Cactus Leather!
 
Most of the time when you see products labeled 'vegan leather', it's just PU leather, rebranded to make it seem more environmentally friendly and high quality. Made using petrochemicals, these pieces are terrible for the environment, and are typically not durable or long lasting. If it's labeled 'vegan leather' without additional details on the material, the overwhelming odds are that you're looking at a plastic leather alternative.
 
On the contrary, when a company goes out of it's way to source and use natural leather alternatives, they will be excited to let you know! Reducing the environmental impact of the fashion industry is a core mission for Culte du Cuir, which is why I spent months researching and sampling natural leather alternatives to find the right material to offer those who prefer not to wear animal hide.
 
This piece is made using Desserto® Cactus Leather, a leather alternative made using cactus fiber - sourced from Alternative Leathers, Co.
"Desserto is the world's first organic material made of Nopal cactus, also known as the prickly pear. Developed and produced in Mexico, Desserto is used by many of the world's top brands including Adidas, H&M, Fossil, BMW, and Mercedes-Benz."
 
It has a smooth flawless surface with a very subtle leather texture, and a light sheen. To my knowledge, none of the 'all natural leather alternatives' are completely free from synthetics - but Desserto® Cactus leather is 90% natural materials! 
 
To reinforce the cactus leather and give this piece it's structure, it's wrapped over a layer of .9mm thick handbag reinforcement material, sourced from Luigi Carnevali - a brand trusted by luxury bag makers. Specifically, Culte du Cuir uses their product BRIO: non-woven fabric used to reinforce bag bottoms, handles and sides.
 
Finally, the back of the belt is lined with thick, black canvas.
 
These materials are secured together using Seiwa Leather Adhesive, a high quality Japanese product, which is a water-based glue that offers a super strong hold!
 
For now, the tie straps used for this piece are a leatherette strapping that is 15mm wide. The long tie straps allow you to wrap the straps around the belt and they can be tied in a knot or a bow either at the front or the back. 
 
The mannequin has a 26" waist and 35" bust. I automatically adjust the length of the 'body' of the belt based on the waist measurement provided (or selected size), such that you get a similar look at at any size. If you have any questions about sizing, please feel free to reach out.
 
Tie straps on the size small are approximately 52" in length (each) - I lengthen these automatically to be the same length in proportion to your waist size, so you'll have the same versatility and options for wrapping and tying as pictured. 
 
If you have a long or short torso, are very tall or short, or have a large bust, please leave a note at checkout and I'll reach out to you to determine the best 'height' at the front of the belt. The standard across all sizes is 9" at the highest point, but I adjust this at no cost as well, to ensure the perfect fit for your body. 
 
**Please note: 
This piece will not last as long as real leather products - these alternatives have come a long way, and are more durable than most PU leather alternatives, but nothing stands the test of time like real, full grain leather. I've constructed this piece with great care, to ensure you will get the most use possible; unfortunately since this is a new material, there is not readily available information on the lifespan of the product. I expect it to hold up longer than typical PU leather, and that is a step in the right direction! Thank you for understanding the limitations of using a material that is so new to the market.
I used 1.2mm firm Cactus Leather to make the prototype pictured - I'll be using 1mm thick Cactus Leather moving forward, to reduce the slight 'pouching' you see where the leather is folded over the corset's curved shape - so future corsets will have a smoother silhouette.
